IMU leader killed, Haqqani network militant capture
The dead militant, named Ilham, was blamed for the Dec. 25 suicide bomb attack that killed a senior Afghan official, and facilitating the training of suicide bombers, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said.
A statement from the alliance said Ilham and one other armed insurgent engaged the security force with fragmentation grenades during the operation. The security force returned fire, killing both.
Also on Sunday, a Taliban leader was captured during an operation in the Nahr-i-Saraj district of southern Helmand province. The leader operated in Yak Chal village, where he distributed ammunition and explosives to insurgents.
In central Afghanistan, a Haqqani Network facilitator was detained during an operation in Pul-i-Alam, the capital of Logar province. The facilitator produced explosives and emplaced roadside bombs throughout the region.
