New parliamentary group to promote peace parleys
KABUL (PAN): Meshrano Jirga members on Sunday formed a 40-member group called “Reform and Justice” to support the ongoing peace process, an official said.
“Our group’s main objective is to back the peace campaign,” a lawmaker from eastern Kunar province and the group’s secretary told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Rafiullah Haideri said the reconciliation effort had been initiated by the Afghan government while the US had separately launched similar parleys with the Taliban, who had agreed to have a liaison office in Qatar.
Reports say a Taliban team has reached Doha to initiate dialogue as a confidence-building measure with the US and the international community.
“The 40-member parliamentary group will make efforts to ensure justice in the country and better coordination between the two houses of Parliament,” Haideri said.
Senator Maulvi Arsalan Rehmani from Paktia was elected as the group’s leader, Maulvi Mahmud Danishjo from Balkh as its deputy head, Rafiullah Haideri from Kunar as secretary and Bismillah Afghanmal from Kandahar as spokesman.
