HERAT: Five people, suspected of involvement in kidnappings and militancy, were arrested with suicide vests in western Herat province on Tuesday, an official said.
Security forces nabbed two militants and recovered a motorbike, two suicide jackets and explosives from then in Herat City, the governor’s spokesman said.
Muhiuddin Noori told Pajhwok Afghan News three members of a group, involved in kidnappings, were arrested by security forces in the provincial capital.
Separately, security forces seized two suicide vests from a depot in the city. No one had been arrested in this connection, Noori added.

ISLAMABAD: Eight soldiers and 30 militants were killed in a fierce clash with Taliban border, on Tuesday, an official said.
Twenty-five paramilitary troops were injured in the gunbattle after dozens of heavily armed militants stormed a paramilitary military post in the Jogi area, a local official told Pajhwok Afghan News on condition of anonymity.
In retaliatory fire from the soldiers, 30 militants were killed and several others injured in airstrikes by security forces. The newly constructed military post was partially damaged in the attack.
Over 300 insurgents were involved in the attack on the checkpost in central Kurram, the source said, adding the gunbattle lasted several hours.

KABUL/HERAT: Two kidnappers were detained and as many captives, including a child, freed by police in Kabul on Tuesday, an official said.
Mohammad Osman, who was kidnapped from the Kabul airport highway two months ago, was kept in captivity in Shakardara district, a spokesman for the 101st Asmayee police zone said.
Hashmatullah Stanikzai told Pajhwok Afghan New the 13-year-old victim was released in Mirbacha Kot district on Monday. One suspect was detained in connection with the incident.
Ahmad Fahim, 20, was kidnapped three days ago from the 1st police district of Kabul to Paghman, he said. Fahim was freed after one of the kidnappers was held in the Kot-i-Sangi area. The kidnappers had asked for $500,000 in ransom.
Also on Tuesday, three civilians were shot dead by an unidentified gunman in western Herat province, police spokesman Col. Noor Khan Nekzad said.
The shooting took place in the 6th police district of Herat City, where a gunman opened fire on the vehicle the three individuals were travelling in, Nekzad added. The killer managed to escape.

KABUL: Four insurgents were killed and five others arrested during joint operations in different provinces over the past 24 hours, defence and interior ministries said on Tuesday.
The operations were conducted by Afghan and NATO-led troops in Laghman, Khost, Paktia, Helmand and Maidan Wardak provinces, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said.
A statement from MoI said three AK-47 assault rifles with five magazines and one anti-vehicle mine were seized during the operations.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said in a separate statement severn suicide vests, 15 anti-vehicle mines, three weapons and four hand grenades were seized in the Zheri district of Kandahar province.
Two Afghan National Army (ANA) were killed and nine others wounded following roadside bomb explosions in the Bakwa and Maiwand districts of Farah province.

KABUL: An International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) servicemember died on Tuesday following an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan, the alliance said.
The death was announced in a brief statement that neither revealed the nationality of the fallen soldier nor the exact location of the incident.
Mostly, US, British and Canadian soldiers are deployed to the volatile south — the heartland of the Taliban insurgency.
With the latest fatality, the death toll for foreign forces in Afghanistan this year has increased to 34, including 25 Americans. Last year, 566 international soldiers were killed in the country.

NIMROZ: Two people were detained by counternarcotics police on charges of trafficking 308 kilograms of drugs in southwestern Nimroz province, officials said on Tuesday.
The smugglers, held in Chakhansur district on Monday night, wanted to traffic the drugs to Iran, Col. Mohammad Musa Rasuli, the provincial police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said 118kgs of heroin and 190 kg of opium placed in a car were seized from the men. According to Rasuli, the drug traffickers, hailing from Chakhansur, have confessed to their crime.
A counternarcotics police official, who wished anonymity, said the men initially tried to escape, but were arrested by police.
