HERAT CITY (PAN): At the head of a delegation, the governor of western Herat province on Wednesday left for Turkmenistan to discuss cooperation in energy and trade sectors, his deputy said.

Deputy Governor Asil Din Jami told Pajhwok Afghan News the administarive chief of the Mari province of Turkmenistan had invited the Afghan delegation to pay a two-day visit for talks on economic and trade cooperation.

Headed by Daud Shah Saba, the delegation includes officials from energy, economic, commerce and industries and public works departments. Representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) are also part of the team.

“The Afghan delegates will discuss with Turkmen officials a pipeline taking gas to Herat, besides trade and economic cooperation and an increase in gas and power imports from the country,” the deputy governor said.

The two countries had agreed to enhance economic cooperation during President Hamid Karzai’s visit to Turkmenistan, Jami said. Herat imports electricity from Turkmenistan.

The fuel department deputy head, Jalil Ahmad Azizi, said demand for gas had increased in Herat due to the low voltage of electricity.
