Pakistan ready to push Taliban, allies to make peace: Khar

ISLAMABAD (PAN): Pakistan’ foreign minister on Thursday said the country would play its role to push the Taliban and the Haqqani network leaders to make peace if asked by the Afghan government to do so.

Speaking to journalists in Islamabad a day after talks with President Hamid Karzai and her Afghan counterpart, Zalmai Rassoul, Hina Rabbani Khar said the country was ready to help the Afghan government take forward the peace process.

She said Pakistan was committed to ending the decades-long war in Afghanistan, adding they were ready to play a role if the Afghan government asked for bringing the Taliban and the Haqqanis to the negotiation table.

She said they would do what the people of Afghanistan wanted and expected from them, saying effective talks were still miles away. She believed the Afghan-led peace efforts would have positive outcome.

“Whenever Afghans themselves come forward and take the lead, Pakistan would spare no efforts in helping them in this regard,” she said.

Khar arrived in Kabul on Wednesday and held meetings with President Hamid Karzai, foreign minister, Dr. Zalmai Rassoul and other government officials and political figures.
