ASADABAD (PAN): Police in eastern Kunar province on Tuesday handed over 46 heavy and light weapons to the Disbandment of Illegal Armed Groups (DIAG) programme, officials said.
The weapons included nine Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs), seven rocket launchers, six machineguns, 22 Kalashnikovs, two rifle guns, as many pistols and five BM1 missiles, the provincial police chief said.
Brig. Gen. Ewaz Mohammad Naziri told Pajhwok Afghan News the arms had been seized from illegal armed groups.
Governor Syed Fazlullah Wahidi said they had intensified efforts at seizing illegal weapons from people to ensure the law and order in the province.
He vowed to disarm private security companies in the future in compliance with a presidential decree on dissolving illegal private security firms.
He said they had collected weapons from companies after completion of projects the firms kept security for.
