10 Haqqani militants killed in Waziristan drone attack
ISLAMABAD (PAN): Ten members of the Haqqani network were killed when a US drone fired missiles into the troubled Pakistan's northwestern tribal region of North Waziristan near the Afghanistan border, local officials said on Wednesday.
The CIA-operated aircraft fired missiles into a compound in the Spalgi area, 15 kilomentres south of Miranshah, the main town in the region, on Tuesday morning, political administration official Taslim Khan told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He had no information about the casualties, but a security official on condition of anonymity said 10 militants, including Afghan fighters, were killed in the attack. The compound belonged to the Haqqani network.
A local reporter, Malak Mumtaaz, said the compound was destroyed as a result of the strike and the victims could not be identified.
Drone attacks were halted for about a month after NATO helicopters targeted two Pakistani security posts in the Salala area of Mohmand Agency, killing 24 soldiers and injuring more than a dozen others on Nov. 26, 2011.
