SAR-I-PUL (PAN): Seven children have died of cold weather conditions in the Kolfgan district of northern Takhar province, officials said on Sunday.
The deaths occurred in Kharqa Qan, Nawan and Sar Chushma villages, which have been disconnected from the district centre due to road blockades by heavy snow.
The town’s administrative head, Muhammad Raza Sarisangi, told Pajhwok Afghan News the death toll could increase if the roads were not reopened. He said so far one metre of snow had been recorded on roads leading to remote areas.
“All roads have been blocked due to heavy snow over the past 10 days,” said a resident of Kharqagan village, where two children died of extreme cold. He added 300 household animals had perished in neighbouring villages.
