KABUL, have died due to the ongoing cold wave and snow avalanches that hit central Daikundi province, officials said on Thursday.

Four children and two men died when they were trapped in snow after a heavy avalanche hit a remote village in the Sang Takht district, the town’s administrative head said.

Sher Jan Mohammadi told Pajhwok Afghan News two women died on Wednesday night on their way to hospital in Neili, the capital of Daikundi.

Hadi Rahimizada, a provincial council member from the district, confirmed the deaths, saying drinking water in 12 villages had frozen due to the cold weather.

Governor Qurban Ali Uruzgani said they had received a report from local officials about the situation and necessary measures would be taken to prevent more casualties.

He acknowledged roads leading to the district had been closed by heavy snowfall while other district routes had been reopened.

Last week, five people died and three others were injured as a result of avalanches in the Miramur district of the province.
