Daily Security Brief: February 23, 2012
KANDAHAR: More than a dozen militants and nine drug smugglers were arrested in different parts of southern Kandahar province over the past week, an official said on Thursday.
The arrests came during police operations in Kandahar City, the provincial capital, Zherai, Punjwai, Maiwand, Arghistan and Shorabak districts, the deputy police chief told a news conference.
Col. Rahmatullah Atrafi said border police arrested a would-be suicide attacker and seized a car bomb in the Spin Boldak district.
He added 640 kilogram of explosives, a motorcycle, a suicide vest, 70 pistols, 33 Kalashnikovs, a machine gun, 28 kg of heroine and 56 kg of opium were seized from the detainees.
