WASHINGTON (PAN):  (PAN): A Zarif design trunk show was held at the Foggy Bottom headquarters of the State Department, where sportswear, evening dress and accessories by eminent Afghan entrepreneur, designer and human rights activist Zolaykha Sherzad sold like hot cakes.

Sherzad’s collection, which has been shown and sold around the world, made its first appearance in America’s capital this week. “I am so grateful for the warm welcome in Washington this week,” she said.

At its core, Zarif Design acts as ambassador, sharing Afghanistan‘s cultural heritage with the world. Sherzad started a non-profit organisation in 2000 that has successfully rebuilt and supported schools in rural Afghanistan and developed programmes in the US and Europe to raise cross-cultural understanding.

While living in Kabul and supporting the schools in 2004, she started Zarif Design with the goal of reviving the Afghan culture.

“The success of Zolaykha’s business and humanitarian initiatives is tremendously inspiring,” said the Afghan ambassador to the US, Eklil Hakimi. “Her passion for beauty and compassion for all people shows the true spirit of our country, and the fact that her beautiful products have been embraced by people around the world is a leading indicator of what we envision – an Afghan renaissance, not just a post-war recovery.”

Zarif Design demonstrates the tremendous possibilities of intersecting new creative designs with these time-honoured arts to satisfy contemporary tastes.
