KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): A tree plantation drive got under way in southern Kandahar province on Saturday. Two million saplings would be planted as part of the campaign.

The drive was initiated in the Eidgah area of Kandahar City, the provincial capital, after a ceremony attended by Governor Toryalay Weesa, Mayor Qazi Muhammad Omer Omer and a number of government officials.

The Municipality and the Department of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock had trained officials to ensure the success of the campaign, the governor told Pajhwok Afghan News.

According to the mayor, plans have been evolved to train workers for plantation in the city, where saplings are to be planted in schools, offices, parks and along roads.
