HERAT CITY (PAN): Around 1,100 students were awarded certificates on completing an Islamic studies course in western Herat province, where more than 20,000 boys and girls are enrolled at seminaries, officials said on Monday.

The students completed their course at the Ghyasia Religious School under the Ministry of Education Shafiq Samim told the graduation ceremony in Herat City.

He praised the school administration’s efforts for promoting Islamic education. A large number of religious scholars, provincial government officials and spiritual leaders attended the ceremony.

Samim said: “It is a matter of honour that Islamic education is being promoted side by side with English education in Afghanistan.” He identified the establishment of more religious schools as a priority for the education ministry.

Although religious schools lack proper buildings, the ministry has granted them considerable concessions.

The seminary’s deputy head, Maulvi Mohammad Kababiani, said 800 boys and 300 girls graduated from 12th and 14th grades. The students could continue higher studies at government and private universities.

With 27 branches in Herat City and districts, as well as in western Badghis province, the school was registered with the education ministry in 2007. More than 7,000 students, including 2,500 girls, are currently studying at the facility.

One of the graduates, Abdullah, thanked the ministry for facilitating the religious school.  Education officer Kamran Taqwa said dozens of religious schools were operational in 15 districts of the province, providing education to more than 20,000 pupils.
