SHEBRGHAN/AIBAK (PAN): Around 2,000 poor families were assisted with edibles in northern Jawzjan province, while women farmers received agricultural aid in northern Samangan, officials said on Tuesday.

Food itmes and wheat seeds, donated by the World Food Programme (WFP), were being distributed to residents of Faizbad and Khanqah districts in the first phase, the Jawzjan rural rehabilitation and development director said.

Muhammad Yusuf Sayad told Pajhwok Afghan News each family received 50 kilograms of wheat flour and as much seeds. The 300 tonnes aid will be distributed to poor families in another four districts.

One of the recipients, Hayat Guil, a resident of Khanqah district, said the assistance was enough for him to feed his family for two months. The aid will be distributed to families in six districts, including Shebarghan, over the next 20 days.

Meanwhile, 200 women farmers received agricultural equipment in Samangan. An agricultural department official, Dida Gul, said the aid was distributed in Hazrat Sultan and Khuram-u-Sarbagh districts.

She added the aid included shovels, scissors for tree cutting, handcarts, sickles and tree seeds. The farmers own nurseries of fruit-bearing trees and the assistance would help them improve their business.

Hafizullh, the Khuram-u-Sarbagh district chief, said 116 women had received assistance, hoping they would be able to boost their income.
