$4.6b transferred last year: Dilawari

KABUL Bank officials on Saturday said a huge amount of $4.6 billion was sent to foreign countries in one year in violation of a Cabinet decision banning the transfer of more than $20,000.

Central bank governor, Noorullah Dilawari told a news conference in Kabul most of the amount had been transferred abroad by moneychangers.

First deputy head of the bank, Khan Afzal Hadawal, believed the money transferred could be even more, because exact figures were not available.

Under last week’s Cabinet decision, Dilawari said, no one was allowed to send more than $20,000 abroad.  From now on, money the transfers will be made through registered banks.

Calling the restriction important in terms the government’s monetary policy, Dilawari said details of money transfers through banks would be available.
