Afghans trounce Maldives in Asia Challenge Cup opener
The national side won the toss and made elected to bat, amassing 353 runs for the loss of five wickets in the stipulated 40 overs, Nusratullah Wafa, a spokesman for the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Javed Ahmadzai became the first centurian of the tournament by smashing a quickfire 161, Wafa said. Pervaiz Khan scored 74 runs, Tariq Khan 64 and Abdul Sabur Akhunzada 25 to guide Afghanistan to the huge total.
“The Maldives, chasing the target, were skittled out for 38 in 22 over,” the ACB spokesman said, adding Naveenul Haq captured four wickets, Qais Ahmad three, Ibrahim Zadran two and Muslim Zazai one for the winners. Ahmadzai was declared the Man of the Match.
ACB Chief Executive Nasimullah Danish, meanwhile, congratulated the team on the triumphant start. He hoped the squad would maintain the same spirit in the encounters ahead.
The event in the Chiang Mai city of Thailand features Afghanistan, the United Arab Emirates, China, the Maldives, Qatar and Bhutan.
