KABUL Bank Governor Noorullah Dilawari announced on Saturday.

The central bank has already confirmed the circulation of fake notes of 500 and 1,000afs denominations in the market. Moneychangers claim fake notes of 50 and 100afs are also in circulation.

Addressing a press conference in Kabul, Dilawari said: “The new note notes, with their unique characteristics, can’t be counterfeited easily.” The fresh bills will be printed by a British company.

On Feb 19, the governor told Pajhwok Afghan News the bank was printing new notes worth one hundred billion afghanis ($203,087,000). The fresh bills are to be released by the end of the year.

The decision, approved by the central bank’s executive council, was driven by the country’s cash requirements, Dilawari had said. Notes of 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 afs denominations are being issued.
