KABUL): The United States on Wednesday offered condolences to the families of those lost in a tragic avalanche in the northern province of Badakhshan.

Scores of villagers were killed and the homes of many more destroyed when the massive avalanche hit Darwaz district. Many people have been missing.

The American government, in partnership with USAID’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), would be sending supplies to the affected area, the US embassy in Kabul said.

A statement from the embassy said that the supplies would be dispatched through an implementing partner from Korugh City of Tajikistan to assist the survivors with tents and plastic sheeting.

“Our thoughts are with those that lost their lives, but also with their families and with those who struggle in the aftermath of this tragedy,” the statement concluded.
