Germany pumps in $312 million aid to Afghanistan

KABUL this year that would be spent in Kabul, Kunduz, Takhar, Badakhshan, Baghlan and Balkh provinces.

On Sunday,  Afghan Finance Minister Hazrat Omer Zakhelwal and German Minister for Development of Economic Cooperation Dirk Niebel signed an agreement to mobilize the funds.

Talking to media, Zakhelwal said the money should be spent on productive projects, such as economic development, education, training, healthcare and good governance.

“Germany provides Afghanistan aid of $ 430 million each year and today’s pact was part of it,” added Zakhelwal.  

The German minister said they would work on expanding their aid to other provinces as well, while German non-governmental organizations would inject an additional $ 10 million. 

Germany has deployed 4800 soldiers in northern Afghanistan under the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) command.

Fifty-three German soldiers had been killed in Afghanistan so far.
