Land grabbing goes unnoticed, MPs tell Karzai

KABUL members who called on President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday said the practice of constructing illegal towns and grabbing private and state-owned lands by warlords was still ongoing without being noticed in Kabul and provinces, the Karzai Office said.

Members of the lower house’s complaint commission presented President Karzai the commission’s annual report on land-grab and illegal construction of settlements on government and private properties, the presidential palace said in a statement.  

The report said 25,000 of acres land was usurped through fake documents and a land belonging to the Arghandi Square in Kabul grabbed by warlords.

The report said the MPs concerned had sent 1260 letters to relevant departments and traveled to various provinces to seek resolution to the issue of land-grab.

The lawmakers also told the President that there were many problems in the justice and judiciary departments, saying prisoners held at the Pul-i-Charkhi jail suffered from bad living conditions.

They said no justice was done in distribution of scholarships to provinces: “Some projects signed in Kabul change many hands before being implemented in provinces,” they said.

About the New Kabul town, they said people faced various problems due to the non-expropriation of property over the past years.

The statement said President Karzai assured lawmakers to discuss their woes with the departments concerned.
