KABUL Twenty20 Qualifiers being played in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, on Tuesday.
Afghanistan won the toss and sent the rivals into batting first in the 20 overs game, the national team manager Shafiqullah Stanikzai told Pajhwok Afghan News over the telephone.
Afghan bowler Izatullah’s three-wicket haul restricted the PNG to 112 runs for the loss of six wickets, he said, adding Muhammad Nabi, Shahpur Zadran and Samiullah Shinwari shared one wicket each.
Stanikzai added Afghan team chased the target in the 19th over for the loss of four wickets. Muhammad Nabi, remained top scorer with 52 runs not out and was declared the man of the match.
The T-20 World Cup Qualifier would continue until March 13. The event involves Afghanistan, the Netherlands, Ireland, Canada, Kenya, Scotland, the USA, Bermuda, Papua New Guinea (PNG), Denmark, Italy, Namibia, Hong Kong, Oman and Nepal.
The winners will join Australia and the West Indies in Group B of the ICC World Twenty20 Cup to be hosted by Sri Lanka in September. The losing finalist will complete Group A that includes defending champions England and 2007 winners India.
