His visit comes at crucial time, when sixteen civilians, including women and children, were killed on Sunday morning -- 11 of the bodies burnt -- a massacre allegedly carried out by American soldiers in Zangabad area of Panjwai district.
International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) commander Gen. John R. Allen in Washington said on Monday that he was shocked and saddened to hear of the shooting. “I offer my profound regret and deepest condolences to the victims and their families. I pledge to all the noble people of Afghanistan my commitment to a rapid and thorough investigation.”
President Hamid Karzai on Sunday said the killing of 16 civilians in southern Kandahar province was an assassination that could not be forgiven.
