AIJU elects new head, executive body members
KABUL (PAN): The Afghanistan Independent Journalists Union (AIJU) on Monday elected its new head and members of the executive committee through a secret ballot contested by 45 journalists from 30 provinces.
Khpalwak Safai, news manager at Shamshad, a private TV channel, was elected unopposed as head of the union in a vote that takes place after every two years.
Safi. Sharifa Zurmati was elected as first deputy head of the executive committee and Ahmad Hinayesh, a journalist with Radio Liberty in central Parwan, as second deputy head. Former head of the union, Rahimullah Samander, was elected as secretary of the committee.
Happy over his election, Safai vowed to address the problems being faced by journalists. He called insecurity a key challenge that warlords used to hide their activities.
Speaking on the occasion, a member of the International Federation of Journalists, Josh Bird, promised all possible cooperation with Afghan journalists in their efforts at strengthening democracy.
