KABUL): A gas cylinder explosion triggered a huge fire at a busy market on Sunday night, causing massive losses to traders, on the outskirts of the capital Kabul.

“The blaze broke out at 10.10pm in the Sang Trashi area of 1st police district, inflicting financial losses on traders,” Col. Mohammad Kazem, head of firefighting department, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said firefighters arrived at the scene within five minutes and managed to douse the fire, and prevented it from spreading to other places.

No casualties were reported.

Haji Nesar Ahmad, an shopkeeper in the market, said he had lost about $50,000 (2,478,500 afs) worth of goods.

He added: “I had goods worth $100,000 in my store, but after the firefighters put out the blaze, half of my goods were destroyed.”

Authorities are yet to determine the actual loss. A Pajhwok reporter at the scene says currently the fire was under control and smoke continued to billow from the site.
