50 tonnes of expired medicine torched

KANDAHAR (PANinfo-icon): Fifty tonnes of expired medicine were set on fire by the public healthinfo-icon department in southern Kandahar province on Wednesday, an official said.

The drugs torched in the Murchi Kotal area had been collected from pharmacies, clinics and import companies during the first quarter of the last solar yearinfo-icon.

Public Health Director Dr. Abdul Qayyum Pukhla told Pajhwok Afghan News some traders imported low-quality medicine.

"The medicine market is facing problems in Afghanistaninfo-icon, where over 500 companies are importing drugs. With market demand far less than imports, the drugs eventually expire," he said.

Pukhla asked interior and finance ministries to cooperate with public health officials in prevent the import of spurious medicines. He also suggested the creation of laboratories in large provinces to check medicine quality.
