15 Taliban dead in Greshk offensive
LASHKARGAH (PAN): Fifteen insurgents were killed during an operation by US special forces in the restive southern province of Helmand, a local official said on Friday.
The six-day offensive in the Mermandab area of Greshk district concluded last night, the town’s administrative head, Mohammad Saleem, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
In addition to defusing dozens of roadside bombs, the official said, the soldiers also recovered 115 landmines. At least one civilian was killed and another wounded in a roadside bombing.
Saleem added the area had been cleared of militants as a result of the operation, aimed at enforcing the government’s writ across the district. The coalition troops suffered no casualties.
Without commenting on the offensive, Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi said the rebels had shot down a remotely-piloted aircraft of NATO-led soldiers in Nawzad district. He claimed two foreign troops were killed in bomb attacks in the town.
