Death toll from Badakhshan avalanches rises to 18

FAIZABAD (PAN and children, were killed and 20 houses damaged by snow avalanches in the Nasi district of northeastern Badakhshan province, officials said on Sunday.

The avalanches hit Monikh, Rio and Shorian villages on Friday, increasing the toll to 18, said the provincial chief for the Afghanistan Natural Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA).

Sanaullah Amiri told Pajhwok Afghan News some of the people were rescued by residents and search operation was ongoing to retrieve bodies. The number of dead could go up, he feared.

Deputy Governor Shamsur Rahman confirmed the incident, saying ANDMA had provided one million afghanis ($19,952) in aid to the affected people.
