KABUL): The Kabul mayor has warned land grabbers that the municipality will take stern action against offenders this year, including taking back illegally occupied plots.

“They (municipality) would seriously deal with land grabbers, who are trying to evade arrest,” Mohammad Younus Nawandish told a press conference in Kabul on Saturday.

Under a presidential decree, the mayor said, the municipality would identify the pieces of land that had been acquired illegally. Effective steps would be taken to wrest back the plots, he promised.

Nawandish said work on 63 construction projects, worth $64.44 million (3,232.31 million afs), would be launched this year. Over 100 kilometers of roads and streets will be asphalted, sidewalks constructed, public parks established and lighting along roads using solar energy would be done this year.

He said 47 projects worth $37.44 million (1,877.99 million afs) would be funded by the municipality, while the finance ministry would provide money for 16 other schemes worth $27 million.

Last year, the municipality’s revenues touched 2.4 billion afs ($0.05). He said 1,500 kilometers of roads were needed in Kabul City, estimated to cost $1 billion. Donor countries and the World Bank have promised funds for infrastructure projects.
