SAR-I-PUL CITY (PAN): A secretary to the former Sar-i-Pul governor has been arrested on the charge of firing at demonstrators during a rally two months ago, officials said on Wednesday.
Participants of the rally on Feb. 5 asked the then governor, Syed Anwar Rahmati, to step down after his guards allegedly raped a girl.
One protester was killed and nine others were wounded when the protest turned violent, with demonstrators setting fire to the governor’s office.
His secretary and guard, Mohammad Ali, was detained by police on the charge of opening fire at the crowd, deputy police chief Jahangir Khan said. A case against the detainee has been referred to the prosecutor office.
However, acting governor Akhtar Mohammad Khairzada said Ali had been arrested for losing his gun.
