FAIZABAD (PAN): At least 123 families have been displaced by landslides as heavy snow started melting in the Zibak district of northeastern Badakhshan province, officials said on Wednesday.

The Gharib village is at the risk of further landslides, with residents saying floodwater had gushed into their houses, an official of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), Dr. Raheen Rashid, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said they had sent teams to the affected areas to assess the situation. He confirmed 123 families had been forced to vacate houses. Forty families have shifted to safer places and provided necessary items. So far no casualty has been reported as the landslides gradually occurred, he said.

Afghanistan Natural Disasters Management Authority head for the province, Sanaullah Amiri, said they had bought land to construct houses for the displaced.

The governor said 588 houses were partially damaged, 176 destroyed, 169 people killed and 144 others wounded in natural disasters over the past four months.

Shah Waliullah Adeeb continued 3,664 animals had perished and dozens of small bridges and 175 acres of agriculture land damaged by snow avalanches across the province.
