KABUL): At least a dozen security personnel were killed and as many wounded in separate incidents of violence across the country over the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said on Thursday.

The dead included nine local policemen and three Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers, said a ministry statement, which gave no further details. ANA troops also seized 34 anti-vehicle mines, a hundred kilograms of explosives and some weapons.

Khudadad, the Khand-i-Safed district chief in western Farah province, confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News nine local policemen were killed and several others wounded in a rebel attack on their check-post in the Ranj area.

Nearly a dozen policemen — kidnapped three days ago by the Taliban in the Teer area of northern Badakhshan province — were rescued on Wednesday, said Col. Abdul Wahid, a border police commander. The insurgents seized their weapons and other equipment.

In northern Jawzjan, six security men were wounded when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in the Darzab district late on Wednesday, said Col. Sakhi Dad Haidari, the deputy police chief.
