HERAT CITY (PAN commander who recently joined the peace process was killed in western Herat province, officials said on Friday.

Mohammad Gul was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the Jangar area of Shindand district, provincial head of the High Peace Council Ghulam Sarwar, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Gul was attacked on his way home from the district headquarters, the official said, quoting the victim’s relatives. The ex-militant commander had prior enmity, Sarwar added.

Herat police spokesman Col. Noor Khan Nekzad confirmed the incident, saying that they had launched a search for the killers.
