A million afghanis donated to palace reconstruction

LASHKARGAH (PAN, officials said on Saturday.

Helmand Governor Mohammad Gulab Mangal made the announcement at a gathering in Lashkargah, the provincial capital. Government officials and local businessmen participated in the meeting.

Helmand traders’ union head, Ali Ahmad Nasiri, told Pajhwok Afghan News they had donated 500,000afs and would try to collect more cash for the reconstruction of the palace.

He hoped their contribution would be properly spent on the reconstruction of the building to boost traders’ confidence in the government. He urged the authorities to encourage their role in other projects.

Mangal contributed 100,000 afs to the reconstruction of the palace, taking the donation to 1.068 million — in addition to $4,200. According to local officials, up to 10 million afs will be raised for the project in Helmand alone.

During his speech, Mangal asked the wealthy people to help revive the glory of historical sites in the country. Darul Aman was one of the ancient palaces that needed to be reconstructed, he added.

“Currently, only the Kabul Municipality is trying to collect donations for the Darul Aman Palace. It will be better to extend the process across the country,” he suggested.

On January 15, the municipality opened a bank account for collecting donations to rebuild historical sites, such as Darul Aman, the Chehel Satoon Palace and the Tajik mound in the capital.

The palace was constructed during the rule of Kings Amanullah Khan and Timur Shah but was damaged in the 1990s during the civil strife.
