KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Four new schools were inaugurated in the Mianshin district of southern Kandahar province in a single day on Saturday, benefiting hundreds of students, officials said.

The provincial high peace council department and security officials visited the district to inaugurate four primary schools and a newly-constructed building for the district headquarters.

Education Director Sher Agha Safi told Pajhwok Afghan News it was for the first time that four schools had simultaneously been opened in the district.

Books, notebooks, pens and other materials were distributed to students. He said they were trying to hire professional teachers for the schools and construct buildings for more to ensure a good education environment.

The newly opened schools are located in Zabto, Lakhsang, Kariz and Dakht areas, he said, promising more schools would be inaugurated soon in Ghorak and Nish districts.

The newly inaugurated schools had no buildings, with students attending classes in the open. The education director asked area residents to send their children to school.

A building for the district headquarters was also inaugurated, said Haji Rozi Khan, the town’s administrative head.  He added the project was funded by International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops based in the province

Tribal elders called for the construction of a health centre and other civic facilities for residents, saying the district had long been ignored.
