50pc of Kunar schools without buildings

ASADABAD (PAN): Half of schools in eastern Kunar province do not have proper buildings, causing students numerous problems, the provincial education department said on Monday.

There are 460 schools for girls and boys across the province, with 257 of them having no buildings, Education Director Syed Jamaluddin Hussaini told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Students attended their classes in the open or under trees, he said, adding that there was no other major problem except buildings. The director said they were trying to reconstruct some buildings.

“Kunar is a mountainous province, with most of residents living in mountains, where the government has no writ, but all schools remain open,” he said of public cooperation with the authorities in promoting education.

He claimed even in Taliban-dominated areas, teachers regularly came to schools. “If a teacher remains absent, the Taliban inform the department in a show of cooperation with the education sector.”

He acknowledged new textbooks were yet to be distributed to all schools. Hussaini said there were 3,913 teachers for 73,000 students in the province.

An eighth class student in Dangam district, Wasiullah, complained they had not been provided any textbooks so far. He urged officials to dispatch the books to their schools as soon as possible.

Another student at a girls high school in Asmar district, Fawzai, also grumbled about the delay in textbooks’ delivery.
