ASADABAD (PAN): An Afghan army officer on Friday fired at his US counterparts, killing one and wounding two others on a base in the eastern province of Kunar, an official said.

The latest green-on-blue attack happened at the Jalala check-post in Ghaziabad district at about 9am, the town’s administrative head told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Abdul Wahab said the Afghan soldier shot at the Americans after a verbal clash before fleeing the checkpoint.

In Kabul media office said an individual wearing an Afghan National Army uniform turned his weapon against coalition service members, killing one soldier.

“The incident is under investigation. It is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities,” the alliance said in a brief statement.

With the latest fatality, the number of foreign troops killed by Afghan security personnel this year has increased to 20.

Meanwhile, the Narai district chief also confirmed the attack. Gul Zaman identified the assailant as Mahmood, a resident of the Marja district of southern Helmand province.

He said the killer, a lieutenant, was transferred to Kunar 20 days back.

In Kabul, the ISAF media office said it had received information about the incident. However, it had no details of the shooting.

As usual, the Taliban said the attacker was a member of the rebel movement. The group’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed the shooter had snatched two weapons from the foreignn troops.

On May 7, ISAF voiced its concern at the killing of foreign troop by their Afghan counterparts, saying 19 soldiers had been killed so far during 2012.

The soldiers were killed in 14 attacks by Afghan forces in different parts of the country, ISAF spokesman Brig. Gen. Carsten Jacobson told a news conference in Kabul.

On Sundfay, a US-led coalition soldier was shot dead by a man in the Afghan National Army (ANA) uniform in southern Afghanistan.
