WASHINGTON (PAN, the White House said on Tuesday.

Obama spoke with the two leaders over the telephone, with Afghanistan being a prominent topic for discussion, a statement from his office said.

He updated Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard on recent developments in US-Afghanistan ties, including his trip to Kabul and the signing of the strategic partnership agreement, the White House added.

“During their discussion, the president and prime minister confirmed their shared goals for the ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) meeting,” it said.

Both leaders also touched on ways to create sufficient and sustainable Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) that could continue the progress the international community had made so far in Afghanistan.

During his talks with Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, Obama thanked him for his country’s significant contributions to NATO and discussed transition of security control from coalition troops to Afghan-led forces.
