TQLOQAN/AIBAK (PAN): Heavy floods devastated northern provinces of Takhar and Samangan, killing three people, destroying large swath of farmland and livestock, officials said on Saturday.

Two men lost their lives, one in Baharak and another in Khwaja Ghar district of Takhar province, where floods destroyed animals and land, deputy governor Mustafa Rassouli told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Flash floods also damaged four other districts in the province. In neighbouring Samangan, another man died in the floods in Feroznakhchir district.

Rajab Ali, regional head of Afghanistan National Disasters Management Authority (ANDMA), said the floods that started on Friday have not abated and a team was dispatched to assess the losses in the area.

About 200 acres of farmland, 42 water heads, 200 metres water resistance wall and 100 animals had been all washed away by the floods, he said.

Meanwhile, residents in Nahrin district in Baghlan staged a demonstration blaming officials for neglecting them during the floods – where people lost their farmland and animals.

Last week officials assured they would reconstruct the embankment destroyed by recent floods but nothing had been done so far, Abdul Basir a resident of the district, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

However, district chief Mohammad Gul Sharafat, said about id=”mce_marker”,988 (100,000 afs) had been spent on the reconstruction of the damaged wall.
