KABUL‘s future, but lamented the Karzai government lacked the political will to carry out pledges of the meeting.

The National Coalition of Afghanistan (NCA), Haq Wa Adalat (HWA) and the United National Front and Opposition Against Bases of Foreigners said the government was not in a position to keep promises that would be made at the summit.

Syed Hussain Fazal Sancharki, NCA’s spokesman, said the summit would decide Afghanistan’s fate but he questioned the government’s ability to meet popular expectations.

“I wish the Afghan government had discussions with opposition parties, the National Assembly and civil society to get a true picture of national demands. It would have been able to participate in the summit with a comprehensive agenda,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, the HWA insisted the government should focus on implementation of the constitution, promoting good governance and seriously tackling the scourge of terrorism.

“The decisions made at the conference will be revealed later, but after the signing of the strategic cooperation agreement with the US and support of international community, we are optimistic about the outcome,” said Abbas Navian, a senior member of HWA.

Navian asked Afghanistan’s neighbours to guarantee that they would not interfere in the country’s domestic affairs. “I think the decisions taken during previous conferences were in the interest of the people but they were not implemented. It shows the weakness of the government.”

He added widespread graft in the government and non-enforcement of laws had scuttled enforcement of past promises.

Political analyst and a member of the National Front, Wahid Muzhda, said NATO members’ focus on Afghanistan had diminished after the assassination of Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Ladin.

NATO’s high-level conference is set to kick off in Chicago, where the international community would also decide on the future support, both financial and security, for Afghanistan. President Hamid Karzai is leading the Afghan delegation to the summit.
