KABUL and Ukraine agreed on greater economic cooperation between the two countries and repairs of Soviet-era military equipment, the Presidential Palace in Kabul said on Tuesday.

President Hamid Karzai and his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yanukovych reached the agreement at a meeting on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Chicago, a statement from his office said.

The opening of Ukraine’s embassy in Kabul also came under discussion, with Yanukovych inviting Karzai to visit his country.

Yanukovych said Ukrainian traders were interested in investing in Afghanistan, according to the statement, which said both sides agreed on forming a joint economic commission.

Roohullah Ahmadzai, an official of Afghanistan Investment Support Agency (AISA), welcomed Ukrainian traders’ interest in investment. He said everyone knew all sectors in Afghanistan needed investment and it would benefit both nations.
