JALALABAD/QALAT (PAN): At least five people were killed and another 10 were injured in two separate traffic accidents in eastern Laghman and southern Zabul province, officials said on Saturday.

A head-on collision between a car and a passenger van left 10 people injured on the Kabul-Jalalabad highway in the Aziz Khan Kakas area in Qarghai district, Laghman governor’s spokesman said.

Sarhadi Zwak told Pajhwok Afghan News that three of the wounded were taken to the Laghman Civil Hospital and the others to hospitals in Jalalabad city, the capital of neighbouring Nangarhar province.

He blamed the accident on violation of traffic rules.

Abdul Latif Qayyumi, the Laghman Civil Hospital head, confirmed receiving two injured people at the emergency ward. They are in a stable condition, he said.

Dr. Syed Afandi, the Nangarhar Civil Hospital deputy head, said they had received seven wounded people from the scene, with three of them currently under treatment and the rest discharged.

Elsewhere, five people were killed in another traffic mishap on the Kabul-Kandahar highway in southern Zabul province.

Col. Rafiullah Rafi, the provincial police chief, said the accident took place late on Friday in the Shahr-i-Safa district, when a passenger van crashed into a truck.
