KABUL (the Senate) on Sunday has also endorsed September 9 as National Hero Shaheed Ahmad Shah and Martyrs Day — commemorating it with a public holiday.

The Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on May 19 amended its resolution and decided to mark September 9 as the Day of National Hero Ahmad Shah Massoud and other martyrs.

Massoud, who fought against Soviet troops, was assassinated on September 9, 2001, two days before the 9/11 attacks on the US. Later, parliament conferred on him the title of Afghanistan’s National Hero.

Some of the Senators on Sunday told the house that day should be called as Martyrs Day but others backed resolution of Wolesi Jirga.

Senator Haji Amanullah from Kandahar province said Afghanistan has several martyrs and if the day is named after one martyr then it would harm national unity.

He demanded that September 9 should be called as all martyrs of Afghanistan day.

Senator Sher Mohammad Akhunzada, the representative of Helmand province, said that martyrs’ day should not be specified for one person as the country had millions of martyrs.

“If we want to name the day after one person, then it should be called Prof. Rabbani Day as he was teacher of Massoud,” Akhunzada added.

Mohammad Alam Ezadyar, the 1st deputy speaker who was chairing the Senate meeting, said marking September 9 is respecting blood of all martyrs.

“Ahmad Shah Massoud had not worked for a single tribe, language or one cause, but he wanted welfare of all Afghanistan and he is martyr of the entire nation.”

Among all 53 Senators present in the session, 27 voted in favor of marking of September 9 as National Hero Shaheed Ahmad Shah and Martyrs Day.
