Afghans want Tokyo meet hear domestic issues

Afghans want Tokyo meet hear domestic issues

May 28, 2012 - 17:47

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): Afghan civil societyinfo-icon bodies on Monday urged the international community, attending the Tokyo donors’ conference, to help protect the country’s civil liberties and safeguard the peace process.

Local civil society organisations said that they would ask foreign governments to pledge their support to protect human rights, access to justice, peace and reconciliation and development after 2014.

The international conference would be held in July, where global leaders would discuss future funding for Afghan’s development, after NATOinfo-icon troops leave the country in 2014.

Afghan Womeninfo-icon Network chairperson, Sameera Hamidi, while addressing a press conference in Kabul said the Tokyo conference is a vital gathering to discuss Afghanistaninfo-icon’s progress and could be the last conference in the next 10 years.

“Not only is the Afghan government but the international community also responsible for the recommendations of civil society,” she said.

Chairman of the civil society and human rights organisation, Mohammad Naeem Nazari, said that they would host a two-day preparatory conference on Tuesday and Wednesday, ahead of the Tokyo meet to select 30 members, out of the 250 participants, for the international gathering.

The civil society members are expected to raise a range of issues from good governance, transparency, anti-corruption efforts to free elections during the Tokyo meet.
