LASHKARGAH/ TIRINKOT (PAN): Police on Thursday shot dead a suicide bomber, armed with explosives, before he reached his target in the southern Helmand province, while his accomplice was detained in central Uruzgan province.

The suicide bomber on foot was heading to the district headquarters at 10 am in the Nawa district of Helmand province, but police spotted him and opened fire, district police chief, 1st Lt. Ahmad Shah told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Only the bomber was killed in the explosion due to police firings, he said, while another security official said that a policeman was also injured in the blast.

After receiving intelligence reports about the bomber’s plans, police were waiting for the suspect to approach, the district chief, said Abdul Manan, adding the bomber with an application form tried to enter the headquarters.

In another incident, police nabbed a suicide bomber with explosives packed vest on Wednesday night in the Meharabad area on the outskirts of Tirinkot, the provincial capital of Uruzgan, police spokesman Farid Aial said.

The 25 year old bomber, hailing from Nawe Kalai village of Spin Boldak district of Kandahar wanted to attack the police headquarters, he said.

Meanwhile, a Taliban fighter was killed and two others wounded during a clash with police in the same area, he added.

In another incident on Wednesday night, Chura district police chief, escaped unhurt during a militants’ attack in the district, but a policeman and an attacker were killed in the clash, he said.
