SHIBERGHAN (PAN): Unidentified gunmen on Friday shot dead a local police commander along with a security guard in the northern province of Jawzjan, officials said.

The shooting occurred at 8am when the gunmen entered the commander’s house in the Sherbak area of Qush Tepa district, killing local police officer Hajji Ghulam Qadari and his guard.

Provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Abdul Aziz Ghairat, told Pajhwok Afghan News Qadari was a former Taliban commander, who joined the peace process last year. After being trained, he was appointed as local police commander in the district.

No one has been detained so far in connection with the murder, but police have launched an investigation, Gen. Ghairat concluded.
