Denmark cheers up rural Afghan kids

KABUL-famous toy, the LEGO, which would reach some 1,550 children in far-flung villages in 13 provinces across the country.

A Denmark Embassy’s statement said after extensively supporting war-hit Afghanistan sector since 2003 — by building schools, promoting rural education and printing books — Denmark is now trying to bring cheers to rural kids.

“Denmark hopes to make a positive difference in the lives of Afghan girls and boys with this donation. LEGO is a universal toy that brings together children across of age, gender and ethnicity.

“With the good support of the IRC (International Rescue Committee), the LEGO-bricks will reach some of the most deprived children in Afghanistan. We want to give these children a toy that offers them not only joy, but also helps them grow and develop”, said Danish ambassador Rene Dinesen at the project launch.

Dinesen, along with Afghan Education Minister Farooq Wardak, and IRC country director Nigel Jenkins launched the project at the Denmark Embassy in Kabul on Tuesday.

“LEGO is known globally as an educational toy and this will certainly serve both purposes for children in rural Afghanistan. The IRC is proud to be part of this initiative,” said Jenkins
