KABUL): An Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier opened fire on US troops, wounding five of them in the central province of Maidan Wardak, officials said on Wednesday.
The shooting took place on Tuesday evening when the ANA soldier entered a military base of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in the Hashamkhel area of Syedabad district, an official said on condition of anonymity.
Wali Mohammad, the attacker who hails from northern Kunduz province, managed to flee after injuring the five American soldiers, the official said.
The governor’s spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said they were informed of the incident and an investigation was in progress. The deputy spokesman for the Ministry of Defence Brig. Gen. Daulat Waziri said the attacker fled the area without his weapon.
In Kabul, the ISAF media office confirmed the incident and said details would be released once the probe was completed. The NATO-led force said an individual wearing an ANA uniform turned his weapon at foreign soldiers on Tuesday.
“ISAF service members were wounded in the attack and taken to a medical facility for treatment,” a statement from the multinational force said.
