TOKYO (PAN during the transformation decade (2015-2025).

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda held out the assurance during a meeting with President Hamid Karzai at his residence in the Japanese capital.

The premier greeted Karzai on the success of the conference, at which more than 70 countries and international organisations pledged id=”mce_marker”6 billion in economic assistance to Afghanistan over the next four years.

He said the event sent a message of strong support for Afghanistan’s economic development and reconstruction after decades of conflict. The aid would be spent on the programmes identified by the Afghan government.

Referring to $3.2 billion in new aid to Afghanistan, Noda told Karzai: “I hope your visit will open a new chapter in relations between the two nations.” He was confident the Afghan-led peace process would succeed.

Karzai thanked the government of Japan for hosting the mega conference, saying his administration would pay more attention to good governance and peace during the transformation decade.

The president, believing that efforts at bringing peace and stability to Afghanistan would yield positive results, said talks with Pakistan in this regard would continue.

Capacity-building and scholarships for Afghan students were some of the topics Karzai discussed with the Japanese prime minister. He urged Noda to help Afghan students acquire technical education.

Karzai appealed to the Japanese leader to construct the Herat-Bamyan highway that connects western Ghor provinces.
