KABUL): An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the open-ended Richter scale shook buildings in the central capital Kabul on Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The quake struck the northern Hindu Kush and India.

The epicenter of the quake lay some 72 kilometres southeast of Faizabad, the capital of northern Badakhshan province, and 121 kilometres northwest of Pakistan’s northwestern Chitral valley.

Northern Afghanistan and Pakistan are frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush, which lies near the collision of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
