QALAT (PAN member from southern Zabul province, on Saturday accused the mayor of having attempted to kill him, a claim rejected by the mayor’s deputy.

The lawmaker alleged Mayor Syed Ahmad Sapi and his guards tried to kill him at the governor’s house a day earlier after he called for documents detailing evidence of what he called illegal distribution of land.

The attempt was foiled by intelligence officials present on the occasion, he told Pajhwok Afghan News. “It was a deliberate and a pre-planned act,” he insisted.

Dozens of people protested against the mayor in front of the governor’s house, chanting slogans against the mayor and the governor. But Deputy Mayor Mohammad Jan Rasulyar rejected Qalatwal’s allegation, saying there was only a verbal clash between the two.

The testy exchange came when the lawmaker asked the mayor to provide him documents pertaining to the distribution of land in the provincial capital. The mayor told Qalatwal he would provide him the documents through regional organs.
